What's the purpose of the polymer coating?

A polymer coating is useful for three main reasons:
1.Provides extra corrosion protection for banding or cable tie;
2.Guards against galvanic corrosion;
3.Acts as a cushion layer between hard stainless steel and softer paint or cable jacket;
Nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) are added to steel to make it stainless and help prevent corrosion. Molybdenum (Mo) is also an additive that is particularly used in type 316 stainless steel to improve corrosion resistance in salt water environments.
A polymer coating on stainless steel used in a salt water environment keeps water off the surface of the steel and so impedes corrosion, which lengthens the life of the band or tie.
Galvanic corrosion is an accelerated type of corrosion that occurs when two electrically dissimilar metals are in contact in the presence of a conductive medium,for example salt water.
One way to prevent galvanic corrosion is to put a non-conductive (insulating) layer between the two metals to prevent direct contact. The polymer layer on coated stainless steel banding or coated stainless steel cable ties provides the insulating layer.
Stainless steel banding and cable ties are strong and hard. Some objects fastened by cable ties have softer surfaces than stainless steel, for example cable jackets or any painted object. In the presence of vibration or pitching & rolling there is a risk of deterioration of the softer surface due to abrasion.
Coating on a stainless steel banding or cable tie ensures that a softer, cushion layer sits between the stainless steel and object being fastened. This will reduce abrasion and lengthen the life of the installation.
